Jaws Star Roy Scheider Dies Aged 75

Posted In: . By The Honest Blogger

Roy Scheider, a stage actor with a background in the classics who became one of the leading figures in the American film renaissance of the 1970s, died on Sunday afternoon in Little Rock, Ark. He was 75 and lived in Sag Harbor, N.Y

Mr. Scheider had suffered from multiple myeloma for several years, and died of complications from a staph infection, his wife, Brenda Seimer, said.

Mr. Scheider’s rangy figure, gaunt face and emotional openness made him particularly appealing in everyman roles, most famously as the agonized police chief of “Jaws,” Steven Spielberg’s 1975 breakthrough hit, about a New England resort town haunted by the knowledge that a killer shark is preying on the local beaches.

Mr. Scheider conveyed an accelerated metabolism in movies like “Klute” (1971), his first major film role, in which he played a threatening pimp to Jane Fonda’s New York call girl; and in William Friedkin’s “French Connection” (also 1971), as Buddy Russo, the slightly more restrained partner to Gene Hackman’s marauding police detective, Popeye Doyle. That role earned Mr. Scheider the first of two Oscar nominations.

Born in 1932 in Orange, N.J., Mr. Scheider earned his distinctive broken nose in the New Jersey Diamond Gloves Competition. He studied at Rutgers and at Franklin and Marshall College in Lancaster, Pa., where he graduated as a history major with the intention of going to law school. He served three years in the United States Air Force, rising to the rank of first lieutenant. When he was discharged, he returned to Franklin and Marshall to star in a production of “Richard III.”

His professional debut was as Mercutio in a 1961 New York Shakespeare Festival production of “Romeo and Juliet.” While continuing to work onstage, he made his movie debut in “The Curse of the Living Corpse” (1964), a low-budget horror film by the prolific schlockmeister Del Tenney. “He had to bend his knees to die into a moat full of quicksand up in Connecticut,” recalled Ms. Seimer, a documentary filmmaker. “He loved to demonstrate that.”

In 1977 Mr. Scheider worked with Mr. Friedkin again in “Sorcerer,” a big-budget remake of Henri-Georges Clouzot’s 1953 French thriller, “The Wages of Fear,” about transporting a dangerous load of nitroglycerine in South America.

Offered a leading role in “The Deer Hunter” (1979), Mr. Scheider had to turn it down in order to fulfill his contract with Universal for a sequel to “Jaws.” (The part went to Robert De Niro.)

“Jaws 2” failed to recapture the appeal of the first film, but Mr. Scheider bounced back, accepting the principal role in Bob Fosse’s autobiographical phantasmagoria of 1979, “All That Jazz.” Equipped with Mr. Fosse’s Mephistophelean beard and manic drive, Mr. Scheider’s character, Joe Gideon, gobbled amphetamines in an attempt to stage a new Broadway show while completing the editing of a film (and pursuing a parade of alluring young women) — a monumental act of self-abuse that leads to open-heart surgery. This won Mr. Scheider an Academy Award nomination in the best actor category. (Dustin Hoffman won that year, for “Kramer vs. Kramer.”)

In 1980, Mr. Scheider returned to his first love, the stage, where his performance in a production of Harold Pinter’s “Betrayal” opposite Blythe Danner and Raul Julia earned him the Drama League of New York award for distinguished performance. Although he continued to be active in films, notably in Robert Benton’s “Still of the Night” (1982) and John Badham’s action spectacular “Blue Thunder” (1983), he moved from leading men to character roles, including an American spy in Fred Schepisi’s “Russia House” (1990) and a calculating Mafia don in “Romeo Is Bleeding” (1993).

One of the most memorable performances of his late career was as the sinister, wisecracking Dr. Benway in David Cronenberg’s adaptation of William S. Burroughs’s “Naked Lunch” (1991).

Living in Sag Harbor, Mr. Scheider continued to appear in films and lend his voice to documentaries, becoming, Ms. Seimer said, increasingly politically active. With the poet Kathy Engle, he helped to found the Hayground School in Bridgehampton, dedicated to creating an innovative, culturally diverse learning environment for local children. At the time of his death, Mr. Scheider was involved in a project to build a film studio in Florence, Italy, for a series about the history of the Renaissance.

Besides his wife, his survivors include three children, Christian Verrier Scheider and Molly Mae Scheider, with Ms. Seimer, and Maximillia Connelly Lord, from an earlier marriage, to Cynthia Bebout; a brother, Glenn Scheider of Summit, N.J.; and two grandchildren.

Hillary Rodham Clinton on Saturday morning ripped MSNBC over reporter David Shuster’s suggestion that Chelsea Clinton was “sort of being pimped out” by the campaign.

Hillary Rodham Clinton

“I found the remarks incredibly offensive,” Clinton told reporters in this snowy town outside Bangor. Earlier, she sent a letter to NBC brass that called for swift action against Shuster, who was suspended Friday by MSNBC.

“Nothing justifies the kind of debasing language that David Shuster used and no temporary suspension or half-hearted apology is sufficient,” Clinton wrote to NBC News President Steve Capus, who apparently had already called Clinton to personally apologize.

“I would urge you to look at the pattern of behavior on your network that seems to repeatedly lead to this sort of degrading language,” Clinton wrote. “There’s a lot at stake for our country in this election. Surely, you can do your jobs as journalists and commentators and still keep the discourse civil and appropriate.”

NBC did not immediately respond to an e-mailed request for comment.

The letter and harsh rebuke followed similar comments made by her top advisers and came a day after Shuster issued an on-air apology and was suspended.

The hubbub started Thursday, when Shuster guest-hosted Tucker Carlson’s MSNBC show, “Tucker.” In a discussion about Chelsea Clinton’s role in calling superdelegates on behalf of her mother’s presidential campaign, he asked whether she was “sort of being pimped out in some weird sort of way.”

The Clinton campaign immediately demanded an apology and floated the possibility that Clinton would no longer participate in an MSNBC debate, scheduled for Feb. 26. The campaign did not explain under what conditions Clinton would participate in MSNBC's debate.

In her comments to reporters Friday, Clinton sounded ambivalent about participating in the debate.

“We’ve accepted a lot of debates from a lot of different sponsors, and we’re going to wait and see how this plays out,” she said.

“I am a mom first and a candidate second,” she said. “You know I can take whatever comes my way. That’s what I signed up for as a candidate and an office holder.”

She cast Shuster’s comments as part of “a troubling pattern of comments and behavior that has to be held accountable.”

MSNBC host Chris Matthews last month apologized over remarks he made about Clinton that were widely denounced as sexist.

FULL TEXT OF LETTER:

Dear Mr. Capus,

Thank you for your call yesterday. I wanted to send you this note to convey the depth of my feeling about David Shuster's comments.

I know that I am a public figure and that my daughter is playing a public role in my campaign. I am accustomed to criticism, certainly from MSNBC. I know that it goes with the territory.

However, I became Chelsea's mother long before I ran for any office and I will always be a mom first and a public official second.

Nothing justifies the kind of debasing language that David Shuster used and no temporary suspension or half-hearted apology is sufficient.

I would urge you to look at the pattern of behavior on your network that seems to repeatedly lead to this sort of degrading language.

There's a lot at stake for our country in this election. Surely, you can do your jobs as journalists and commentators and still keep the discourse civil and appropriate.

Sincerely,

Hillary Rodham Clinton

MOUNT CLEMENS -- Jailhouse letters written by convicted murderer Stephen Grant to convicted child killer Jennifer Kukla and other female inmates shows a man full of swagger about his celebrity status and his ability to entice women.

In a series of more than 20 letters hidden on a food cart, Grant wrote about how much he missed his two children, bragging about how people "call me a celebrity," and flirting with Kukla.

"I still laugh when I remember your one note," Grant wrote to Kukla. "You asked 'are you scared of me?' (LOL). You are too nice to be scared of. I just wish we could arrange a rendezvous in the closet one of these days."

Grant is incarcerated in the Macomb County Jail awaiting sentencing on Feb. 21, after being convicted in December of murdering and dismembering his wife, Tara Grant.

Kukla was convicted of first-degree murder in September, after she stabbed her daughters Alexandra, 8, and Ashley, 5, inside her Macomb Township trailer. Kukla, who also killed three family dogs and a pet mouse during her Feb. 4, 2007 killing spree, is serving a life sentence in the Huron Valley Correctional Facility in Ypsilanti, where she is receiving mental health treatment.

Grant's letters, which were written from June to October 2007 while Kukla was also incarcerated in the Macomb County Jail, were released today by the Macomb County Prosecutors Office in response to Freedom of Information requests.

Prosecutors also released letters Grant wrote to other women, including Crystal Conklin, a 27-year-old Warren woman who is charged with fatally beating her 2-year-old son.

Also released today were audio files of Grant leaving messages on Tara Grant's cell phone after he'd fatally strangled her on Feb. 9, 2007, in an apparent effort to cover up his crime.

Grant wrote in one letter to Kukla that he missed his wife. "You are the 1st person to ask if I miss Tara," Grant wrote. "She, for the last 13 years, has been the one I went to with my problems and now I don't have that person to ask for advice." He added a sad face at the end of the sentence.

Grant appeared to brag about his celebrity status in another letter: "Ask the other ladies if they know 'Steve Grant,'" he wrote. "They probably do."

"I get letters from lots of people," he later wrote to Conklin. "Some are total strangers, but I have also gotten letters from people I used to know."

Grant also wrote that he is keeping a journal for his children, "so when they are older, they can hear about where they really came from from two people who loved them and each other."

Authorities found out about the letters between Grant and Kukla when an assistant Macomb County Prosecutor called Macomb County Sheriffs detectives to inform them that a woman identifying herself as "J.C." was being interviewed on radio station 95.5 FM, claiming to have knowledge that Grant had been passing notes to Kukla.

Detectives heard the last few minutes of the interview, and then contacted the radio station's program manager, who provided them with the woman's telephone number.

The woman, had served a jail sentence the previous summer after being arrested for probation violation, worked passing out food in the mental health ward, where women and men are housed separately. She said she passed notes back and forth between Grant and Kukla by hiding them underneath a Kool-Aid container on the food cart.

"She said the notes from Stephen would say 'how he killed his wife and that he thinks he's cool that he is a celebrity now because he is on TV,' " according to an unsigned police report written on Nov. 28, 2007, which explains how detectives found out about the letters.

According to other police reports released by prosecutors today, Detectives Mark Grammatico and Jason Abro interviewed Kukla in prison. She told them she wrote to Grant at first pretending to be a girl named Sarah, because "everybody on our side wanted to find out what he would say about his crime," Kukla told police. She also told them she had given the letters to her father.

Yankee Greats Wife Kim Mattingly Arrested

Posted In: . By The Honest Blogger

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (AP) — The estranged wife of Los Angeles Dodgers coach Don Mattingly was arrested and charged with public intoxication and disorderly conduct after police say she refused to leave his property in Indiana.

Police arrested 45-year-old Kim Mattingly after they were called to the home of the former Yankee first baseman to investigate reports of a person refusing to leave on Saturday, a probable cause affidavit said. The affidavit, signed by a Vanderburgh County Sheriff's Deputy Chad Howard, said she smelled of alcohol and screamed at officers.

The couple filed for divorce in November on the grounds of irreconcilable differences. The divorce has not been finalized, and no further action has been taken.

Kim Mattingly was released from the Vanderburgh County Jail after posting $50 bond shortly after her arrest and made her first court appearance Monday on the charges. She is scheduled to appear next on March 3.

Her lawyer, Angela Freel, did not return a telephone call seeking comment.

Kim Mattingly told investigators that Don Mattingly had taken her phone and she wanted it back, the affidavit said. Police spoke to Mattingly, who said he did not have the phone.

Police had told her not to go to the house earlier in the day, Howard said in the affidavit.

On Monday, Don Mattingly filed for a protective order against his wife, which the court granted. In the petition, Mattingly cited three examples of his wife appearing at his home, including an incident on Jan. 22 during which she tried to kick down his door.

Mattingly, who grew up and lives in Evansville, cited family reasons when the Dodgers announced last month that he would serve as special assignment coach for the 2008 season instead of hitting coach.

A former AL MVP during 14 seasons with the Yankees from 1982-95, Mattingly spent the past four seasons as a coach under Joe Torre. After losing out to Joe Girardi for the Yankees' manager job, Mattingly followed Torre to the Dodgers.

The 2008 Audi R8 supercar, as it's already been dubbed, boasts two transmissions with design elements reminiscent of the Porsche or Corvette. With its unique layout, and everyday driving capabilities, the R8 offers more than just the raw performance that's usually likened to a sports car. Audi R8 2008 manufacturer's suggested price starts at $109,000 dollars.

This two-seater with a midsized engine incorporates modernized technology from the company's Le Mans-winning prototype. Adapted for street driving, the Audi R8 first made its debut in 2006 at the Mondial de l'Automobile in Paris, France and was similar to the Le Mans Quattro concept car that first appeared in 2003.
Price Range

The detailed price ranges for the 2008 Audi R8 is as follows:

Coupe Quattro: Manufacturer's suggested retail price (MSRP) - $109,000, Invoice price - $101,370

Coupe Quattro with Auto R-tronic: MSRP - $118,000, Invoice price - $109,740

New Features for 2008 Audi R8

The 2008 Audi R8 features an aluminum body structure and delivers power to its 420 horsepower (hp), 4.2L V8 engine with direct fuel injection via either a 6 speed manual transmission, or a gearbox system known as the R-tronic, Audi's clutch-less manual system.

The warranty for the R8, which is Audi's first midsize exotic sports car, is 48 months or 50,000 miles, with the same on the powertrain, and 144 months, or unlimited mile warranty for rust damage.

Performance and Power of Audi R8 2008

The R8 offers a quiet ride with easy drivability that's largely due to its electromechanical steering system as well as the electromagnetic shock absorbers that control and adapt fluid levels within the shocks based on the road's surface.

Both trim options, either the R8 coupe Quattro or the Quattro with Auto R-tronic, have a six speed manual overdrive, a mid-mounted 4.2L V8 engine, with 420 hp @ 8250 revolutions per minute (RPM), and a pound-foot torque rating of 317 @ 4500 RPM.

The Audi R8 Quattro can reach 0 to 60 miles per hour (MPH) in an impressive 4.26 seconds, and the R8 with R-tronic in just five tenths of a second more with a top quoted speeds of 187 MPH.

Body Style and Options of 2008 Audi R8

The 2008 Audi R8 features the classic lower stance of a sports car but with an added, optional design element referred to as the "blade." Carbon-fiber side blades on either exterior side of the car, behind the door and just in front of the rear wheels, run at an angle from the roof to the side air intakes and the rocker panels.

The R8 comes equipped with 19 inch wheels, xenon headlights, LED turn signals and brake lights, and a retractable rear spoiler that can either operate manually or automatically.

The exterior color choices for the 2008 Audi R8 include: Brilliant Red, Daytona Gray Pearl, Ibis White, Ice Silver Metallic, Jet Blue Metallic, Mugello Blue Pearl, and Phantom Black Pearl.

Interior Design and Features of Audi R8 2008

It seems no expense was spared on the R8's unrivaled and original interior design that includes air conditioning, a seven speaker CD player, all leather seating for two, heated, multi-adjustable power seats, and power windows and door locks.

Taller drivers will appreciate the longer wheelbase, and the car's roomy cabin that resembles an airplane's cockpit and has been christened with the name "monoposto" by Audi. A dazzling array of control wraps around the driver's area, not alike that of a single-seated racing car, with plenty of polished aluminum accents.

A rather unusual feature for a sports car, the Audi R8 also provides ample storage space as well as space-saving cup holders, and a 3.5 cubic-foot sized front trunk.

Cruise control, a tachometer, leather steering wheel, a trip computer, and a tire inflation/pressure monitoring system are also standard interior features of the R8, while optional choices include a Bang & Olufsen premium stereo system, subwoofer, and a navigational aid system.

The "Convenience Package" for the 2008 Audi R8 contains features such as auto-dimming rearview mirrors, Bluetooth phone connectivity capabilities, a six disc CD changer, and parking sensors.

The color choices for the R8's leather interior, depending upon the exterior finish, include: Black, Limestone Gray, Luxor Beige, and Tuscan Brown.

Safety Features of 2008 Audi R8

The 2008 Audi R8 has several standard safety features including both driver and passenger front and seat-mounted side airbags, as well as knee protecting airbags, an ABS braking system, and both traction and stability control.

The GoDaddy.com Advert Superbowl Banned

Posted In: , . By The Honest Blogger

GoDaddy.com has just changed Super Bowl commercials forever. The web hosting company put together a controversial ad that Fox rejected.

As a result, GoDaddy has decided to air the commercial featuring Danica Patrick on their website. The would-be Super Bowl ad references the word "Beaver" speaking to stuff rodent, but it gives off so many inappropriate comparisons to slang world for lady goods that the commercial got scrapped.

It is actually not that controversial, but definitely very smart. GoDaddy.com still got their Super Bowl slot, but used it as a way to direct people to their website with this ad:

Website traffic and Super Bowl exposure hat's why GoDaddy is the big winner here! Genius.

Tiger Wins Dubai Classic

Posted In: . By The Honest Blogger

The massive win prize that was on offer to the winner of the Dubai Classic went to Tiger Woods, his fourth straight tournament win. Here is the full report on the Dubai Classic.

Tiger Woods had five birdies in his last seven holes to come home in 31 on his way to a one-shot victory in the Dubai Desert Classic.

The world number one started the day in a tie for fifth place, four shots adrift of third round leader Ernie Els.

Three birdies in his first four holes got him to within striking distance, only for his challenge to stutter with bogeys at the sixth and ninth.

But he stormed home with seven birdies in a flawless back nine and when Els found water with his second shot at 18, Woods had his fourth straight tournament win.

Target

Germany's Martin Kaymer - winner two weeks ago in Abu Dhabi - set the early target with a 66 for 13-under-par, but after Woods chipped in at 12 he set about overhauling that.

He drew level with a 10-foot birdie putt at 17 and then holed from 20 feet at 18 for birdie after an uncharacteristically poor chip.

That got him to 14-under, but Els could have forced a play-off with a birdie at the par five 18th.

The South African three-time former champion hit a fine drive but necked his fairway wood into the water in front of the green and ended up taking six.

That gave Kaymer second place on his own, with Els tied third alongside fellow countryman Louis Oosthuizen. The world number five has now finished inside the top three in each of his
last seven visits to Dubai.

Defending

Oosthuizen was eight under for the day on the 18th tee but also took six.

Defending champion Henrik Stenson started the day in second place and played superbly tee-to-green for 16 holes, but could not buy a putt. The Swede had only one birdie - at the second - and his challenge disintegrated as he finished five, seven.

Lee Westwood also struggled after starting in third, a 73 giving him a seven-under total. That was just good enough to give the English Ryder Cup star his 11th top 10 from his last 12 tournaments.

founder of a Bay Area company that designed a My Space-like web site for children, was killed along with her 10-year-old son Friday when the small private jet she was piloting crashed shortly after take-off near Augusta, Maine.

Alison Rhodes, a spokeswoman for her firm, confirmed Saturday that Symons and her son, Balan, were the two who were killed in the crash. She was there to there to attend a ski camp with her son, associates said.

The 46-year-old Symons, a mother of a two children, was the founder and chief executive of Industrious Kid, a privately held company in Oakland that created Imbee, a "social networking" site for kids 8-14 years of age that shielded them from the adult content sometimes found My Space or Facebook.

Symons lived in San Francisco until about a year and a half ago, when she moved with her children to Steamboat Springs, Colo. She would commute a couple times a month to the Bay Area in her jet, which she flew herself.

She was the registered owner of the Cessna Citation C-525, which took off from Augusta State Airport at 5:45 p.m., bound for Lincoln, Nebraska. There was snow, sleet and freezing rain in the region, but investigators said it was too early to tell if weather was a factor in the crash, according to Associated Press.

Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Jim Peters told AP that the pilot of the plane declared an emergency shortly after take-off, citing a problem with the attitude indicator, an instrument that measures whether the jet's nose is up or down in relation to the horizon, and the banking angle of the wings. The trouble apparently began when the plane was at an altitude of only 3,000 feet.

An air traffic controller was in radio contact with the plane, and tried to guide it back to the Augusta airport, but saw it drop off the radar screen. The plane went down in wooded area of West Gardiner Maine, about 10 miles from Augusta, the state capital.

Fire crews recovered two bodies from the wreckage. There were no injuries on the ground, according to police.

Tim Donovan, a co-founder and vice president of marketing for Industrious Kid, said Symons was in Maine attending a weeklong ski camp with her son. Donovan, his voice cracking after he had just heard about the crash Friday evening, said, "She has been a pilot for about 10 years. She was the only one who drove that plane."

A UCLA trained engineer, Symons was a part of several spectacularly successful Bay Area electronics firms. She was a co-founder of Alameda internet equipment maker Ascend Communications, which was purchased by Lucent Technology for $20 billion in 1999. Symons went on to co-found Zhone Technologies, an Oakland telecommunications company.

Her two children inspired her to start yet another company, Industrious Kid, which is riding the social networking phenomenon. "Think of it as Facebook with training wheels," said Donovan.

PHOENIX -- It was a Hall of Fame day for the Washington Redskins, with Art Monk and Darrell Green elected to the shrine on Saturday. Former commissioner Paul Tagliabue failed to get in for the second straight year.

"There's going to be a party at Redskin Park soon," Green said while talking by teleconference with Monk.

Also voted in were New England linebacker Andre Tippett, San Diego/San Francisco defensive end Fred Dean, Minnesota/Denver tackle Gary Zimmerman and senior committee choice, Kansas City cornerback Emmitt Thomas.

In his eighth year of eligibility, Monk finally was chosen. He concluded his career after the 1995 season with Philadelphia, but spent 13 years with the Redskins as one of the NFL's premier receivers. Monk held records for most consecutive games with a reception (164) and career catches (820). Both have been surpassed, but Monk didn't play in as wide-open an era on offense as many other receivers. He was one of the most consistent possession and third-down receivers in the league throughout his 14 pro seasons.

Green, one of the NFL's speediest and most skilled cornerbacks for two decades, spent his entire career (1983-2002) with the Redskins. He holds the record for consecutive seasons with an interception (19), and had 54 picks for 621 yards and six touchdowns. A member of the 1990s All-Decade team, Green made seven Pro Bowls.

"This is incredible. This is so special," Green said when informed of the vote. "This is out of this world. This literally transcends football, everything I have gone through to do what I was able to do. It was more than the ability to run and cover. It just goes so far beyond that."

The other player in his first year of eligibility, receiver Cris Carter, was not elected. Carter finished his 15-year career second on the career list in receptions and touchdown catches.

Inductions will be at the Pro Football Hall of Game in Canton, Ohio on Aug. 2.

"I looked forward to the day we are going to Canton," Green said, breaking up with emotion. "Hopefully, there are several hundred thousand hotels there, and several hundred thousand tickets."

Perhaps the most surprising outcome was Tagliabue again not getting enough support.

In his 17 years as commissioner, the NFL experienced no labor stoppages, while its revenues from TV contracts skyrocketed. There also were expansions to Jacksonville, Charlotte, Cleveland and Houston under his watch, and several teams moved into new stadiums, many of them built with public funds.

But many, including some reporters on the 44-member selection committee, found Tagliabue unapproachable and uncooperative.

Also failiing to get in were Redskins guard Russ Grimm, Buffalo Bills receiver Andre Reed, Oakland Raiders punter Ray Guy, Denver Broncos linebacker Randy Gradishar, Chicago Bears defensive end Richard Dent, Miami Dolphins guard Bob Kuechenberg, Vikings guard Randall McDaniel, and Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Derrick Thomas.

Senior committee nominee Marshall Goldberg was not elected, either.

American Jillian Schwartz won the women's pole vault by clearing 4.63m with two-time US champion Jenn Stuczynski second at 4.63 on more misses while 2000 Olympic champion Stacy Dragila failed to clear the opening 4.23m height.

Today was Groundhog Day and Punxsutawney Phil emerged from his burrow and saw his shadow, predicting six more weeks of winter in 2008. More than 30,000 people gathered in the central Pennsylvania town of Punxsutawney to witness the event and cheer the most famous groundhog in the world. Punxsutawney Phil was taken out of the tree stump on a hill called Gobbler's Knob and brought to William Cooper, President of Punxsutawney's Inner Circle, who is the only one that could "speak" to the groundhog. Cooper read the prediction scroll: "As I look around me, a bright sky I see, and a shadow beside me. Six more weeks of winter it will be."

According to tradition, if the groundhog emerges from its burrow on this day and fails to see its shadow because the weather is cloudy, winter will soon end. If the groundhog sees its shadow, it will return into its burrow, and the winter will continue for 6 more weeks. The earliest reference to Groundhog Day was made in 1841 and the tradition has been kept alive ever since. Most analysis claim that the groundhog has about 40% success rate in predicting the weather, which doesn't stop thousands of people from celebrating Groundhog Day every year.

What Did Punxsutawney Phil See For The Future

Posted In: . By The Honest Blogger

Feb. 2 (Bloomberg) -- The groundhog called Phil emerged from his burrow this morning in central Pennsylvania and saw his shadow, which according to legend signals there will be six more weeks of winter in the U.S.

Phil's handlers, John Griffiths and Ben Hughes, removed him from his stump-shaped shelter on a stage in Punxsutawney at 7:27 a.m. local time and proclaimed he saw his shadow. The forecast elicited some boos from the crowd of about 30,000 gathered to await the 122nd annual weather prediction.

``The weather was cold this morning, and I feel very comfortable in saying we had about 30,000 people there,'' said Mike Johnston, vice president of the Inner Circle of the Groundhog Club. He said the temperature was 28 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 2 Celsius) with a wind chill of 14 degrees.

Punxsutawney Phil and his predecessors have seen their shadows 97 times, or about 80 percent of the time, since 1887, according to the Groundhog Club, which conducts the annual event atop Gobbler's Knob. Only 15 times has the Punxsutawney groundhog not seen his shadow, including last year, while another nine results weren't recorded, the club said.

Candelmas

If he sees his shadow, there'll be six more weeks of winter weather, and if he doesn't, there will be an early spring, according to an old German superstition.

Punxsutawney is 90 miles (144.8 kilometers) northeast of Pittsburgh, and has a population of 6,800, with another 10,500 living in surrounding townships, according to the Punxsutawney Area Chamber of Commerce Web site.

Attendance at the annual event has grown since the 1993 movie ``Groundhog Day,'' a romantic comedy starring Bill Murray and Andie MacDowell. A 15th anniversary edition of the movie was released last month.

Central Pennsylvania's earliest settlers were Germans, who said that if a hibernating animal casts a shadow on Feb. 2, the Christian holiday of Candlemas, unpleasant weather was on its way, according to the official Groundhog Web site.

Among other weather forecasting groundhogs making predictions today, four of them disagreed with Phil as Georgia's General Beauregard Lee; Novia Scotia's Shubenacadie Sam; Jimmy of Sun Prairie, Wisconsin; and New York's Staten Island Chuck all didn't see their shadow, meaning an early spring.

Weigh In For UFC81 Results

Posted In: , . By The Honest Blogger

Each of the fighters competing in UFC 81: Breaking Point have made weight.

For the main event, Saturday, Feb 2. in Las Vegas, former UFC heavyweight champion Tim Sylvia came in at an unusually svelte 261-pounds, 4-pounds under the 265-pound limit he usually approaches. His opponent, former Pride heavyweight champ Antonio Rodrigo "Minotauro" Nogueira, was 237-pounds.

While the Sylvia vs. Nogueira fight might be the main event, just as much attention is being given to the heavyweight match between Frank Mir and Brock Lesnar. A former heavyweight champ himself, Mir faces a tough task against Lesnar, a 4-time NCAA national champion in freestyle wrestling. Even though the fight is Lesnar's UFC debut, he is the -150 favorite to win in the Bodog Sportsbook.

While Mir has looked soft for fights in the past, this time he came in looking cut at 255-pounds. Lesnar, as expected, was huge at 265-pounds of solid muscle.

While both headline fights were without fireworks, the weigh ins had some extra excitement thanks to middleweights Terry Martin and Marvin Eastman, who literally butted heads while squaring off, and engaged in a brief pushing match before being separated.

Amanda Knox Case On 20/20

Posted In: . By The Honest Blogger

The vile Amanda Knox was showcased on 20/20 tonight. Amazingly despite all the evidence to the contrary she is portrayed as a sweet girl. Amanda Knox, in case you didn't know, is accused of killing Meredith Kercher with two others - her boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito and Rudy Hermann Guede.

What makes this such a sick program in my eyes is that it is as if the victim is Amanda Knox and not the girl who was murdered Meredith Kercher. Why not make a program based on her, the real victim instead of supporting a woman who in all likely hood is a cold blooded murderer.

Her parents may be firmly behind her but in truth who's parents would turn round and say "Yeah I think she did it - I've always thought my daughter could be a murdering little bitch." - GET FUCKING REAL.

The video of her and her partner outside the scene of the murder shortly after police arrived is also quite disturbing. Who stands there passionately kissing one another when you've just been in the same house where your room mate has been murdered? Even better is the claim by her mother that this is a tender moment.

Murder suspect Amanda Knox threatened a man with a knife just 24 hours before the body of a British student was found murdered, a new witness claimed today.

An Albanian has told police and prosecutors that Knox, 20, was with her boyfriend and fellow suspect Raffaele Sollecito, 24, when the terrifying incident took place.

He said that he was parking close to the house murder victim Meredith Kercher, 20, shared with Knox - who called herself Foxy Knoxy - when his car nudged a waste container.

He claims this provoked an argument with Knox, who eventually pulled a knife on him.

Police in Perugia are investigating the November 1 murder of Meredith, who was found semi-naked in a blood-spattered apartment, having apparently been the victim of a violent sexual assault.

The unidentified witness said: "I've only come forward now because I was scared.

"I spoke with a lawyer before coming to see you but in the end I realized it was important.

"The evening of 31st October I arrived in my car close to the house on Via della Pergola.

"As I was parking my car I hit a rubbish dumpster - a second later I saw two people, a man and a woman, who were behind it and they came towards me shouting.

"We started arguing and then all of a sudden the girl pulled out a knife, she was shouting at me and pointing it at me.

"I am certain it was Amanda Knox, with her was Raffaele Sollecito.

"Then out of the darkness emerged another man, it was Rudy, the three of them were together."

The sensational new evidence was being kept secret but was leaked and today prosecutor Giuliano Mignini said: "This is a very serious matter.

"This statement was a secret and now it is in the public domain. I am not prepared to say anything else about it."

Police sources however said that particulars of his statement including the fact it had been raining that night had already been checked and proved correct.

A source close to the investigation added: "He is a Albanian with a regular residents permit and he has no record.

"His story is being taken seriously as it proves that all three suspects knew each other.

"Knox and Sollecito have denied knowing Rudy but this man's statement puts them together and with a knife 24 hours before poor Meredith was murdered.

"It also suggests that the three were out there armed with a knife and already planning this murder when they were disturbed and it was put back a day.

"He is being taken as a serious and credible witness."

Sheriff Joe Arpaio Has A Message For The Celebs

Posted In: . By The Honest Blogger

Joe Arpaio, the sheriff of Maricopa County, who is also known to be "America's toughest sheriff" has a message for celebrities visiting Maricopa County for the Superbowl:

Stay out of trouble.

So for the football player who might get into a bar fight or the starlet who might drive drunk, consider yourself warned:

“(They’ll) be treated the same as anyone,” Arpaio said Wednesday. “Let the players know that. And Paris better take a limousine. Somebody better tell her that she is in Maricopa County, not Los Angeles County.

“It’s a tough county to be in if you do something wrong. Especially the way I run the law enforcement.”

If it comes to it, Arpaio says he has a “pair of pink underwear, a bologna sandwich and a spot in a dirty old prison tent for Tom Brady, Eli Manning or, most certainly, Paris Hilton”.

Hmmm, a little googling brought up this interesting newsblurb from May 2007. It Seems Arpaio has set his sights on Hilton before "because of some serious overcrowding in Los Angeles jails, she may not have to serve the complete sentence."

Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio says he’s spoken to the chief of jails in Los Angeles and offered to house Hilton at Tent City.

“I just made an offer,” Arpaio said. “Instead of reducing her sentence, which I feel is wrong, why not bring her over here? We can incarcerate her here. She can do her time over here.”

According to the Maricopa County Sheriff's department, the Los Angeles County Sheriff is considering the proposal.

Well, luckily for Paris it never came to pass. But if she’s planning on visiting Phoenix for the Superbowl, she’d better keep her nose clean.

One of the greatest basketball players of all time, Michael Jordan, has sued a Meadville, PA resident named Lisa A Miceli, who claims to be the mother of Jordans child.

Lisa Miceli has, it is alleged, been sending MJ threatening and increasingly violent e-mails and voice-mails since the summer of 2005.

This started immediately after Jordan had 2 seperate DNA test which proved that he was not the father of Miceli's child.

The lady in question really hasn't helped her quest with her amazingly bizarre blog postings at mjordanmistress.blogspot.com and the majority would be of the opinion that she is in need of serious help, myself included.

The messages on the blog include claims, purportedly by Miceli, that Jordan and his family members have assaulted her because of her relationship with him, that her personal items have been stolen and her privacy has been invaded "on a level that is causing severe and unbearable mental pain and anguish in PA."

Some alleged e-mails claim that Jordan had offered to help Miceli, and even proposed to her. But in others, Miceli allegedly bemoans Jordan's lack of attention and his unwillingness to help her out.

In the most recent e-mail in the appendix, sent to Sperling and dated Jan. 16, Miceli allegedly wrote: "If you do not know by now that MJ raped me ... YOU ARE A (expletive) IDIOT."

It really is little wonder that Jordan wants something done about this nutter but the saddest thing about it all is that Lisa Miceli actually has a young child that she should be focusing her attentions on as she will never get that wasted time back.
